A Love CakeLoud silence. Who's heard of that before?
It’s here now, and thoughts saturate this air
Making it hard to breathe. It seems neither one dares
To look up, lest it be misinterpreted.
This minute has in it too much to tell.
The pressure is starting to crush him,
She's already broken.
Finally a word is spoken.
Music plugged in I try not to notice,
But the loud words still cut through.
"Listen, I-"
"No."
That's all I hear.
That's all I know.
Mother can smell supper burning:
We turn our faces, turn up the sound
But we can still sense it, something bound
Is breaking free at last.
We don't want to see.
Finally neither can take any more,
Suddenly they both overflow
Sentences spilling out from the cup of each soul
Vinegar: swift, bitter, full of hurt and heat.
The other holds molasses: slow, soft, sweet.
"I-"
"No. Listen..."
He looks at her intently,
Slowly takes her hand.
The vinegar running out quickly,
She’s falling quiet at his touch
And his vessel still holds so much
His voice softens her chiselled face as he gently speaks,
Combining the ingredients for another love.
Tears are falling now, but his recipe is good.
She looks at the old cake.
He shows her the difference each mistake makes.
Coming finally to an understanding,
Her rain-stained face lifts, sun shows in her eyes.
"Listen.."
"No, I.."
But she reaches for his face
Kisses him hard, lost in his embrace
Those around them exchange little smiles
We've all just seen a strong thing get stronger
We're not blind, we can't pretend any longer
The cake is baking, looks like it’s gonna be good
I pick up my pencil and proceed to write a poem…

NOTE: the strange thing is this couple came and sat down beside me when I was typing this up at school a few weeks after witnessing the incident I just discribed... an ironic coincidence neh?Labels: cake, love, make up, poem
